Worm Gear Materials Guide

Steel worms

Common concepts include carbon or alloy steels, with cut, induction-hardened, carburized or ground tooth options according to the drawing.

Bronze wheels

Aluminum bronze and phosphor bronze are common references for sliding contact, but the grade must be selected for load, speed, lubrication and environment.

Stainless concepts

Corrosion resistance can be useful in wet or washdown service, but galling, strength and mating-material compatibility require review.

Cast iron and polymer wheels

These can serve light-load, cost-sensitive or low-lubrication roles in suitable conditions; they are not universal substitutes for bronze.

Hubs and shafts

The tooth material, hub material and shaft connection may be different. Rim-to-hub torque transfer and machining allowance must be defined.

Documentation

Specify material standard, condition, heat treatment, hardness, case depth, test reports and traceability on the order.

Recommended review sequence

  1. Confirm the machine function and operating duty.
  2. Identify the tooth system and installed geometry.
  3. Check load, speed, sliding, temperature and service factor.
  4. Select materials, heat treatment, lubrication and inspection requirements.
  5. Review shafts, bearings, housing, guards and failure consequences.
  6. Issue and approve the final manufacturing drawing.
