Purpose of backlash

Backlash allows lubricant film, thermal expansion and manufacturing variation. Zero backlash can cause binding and heat.

Measurement conditions

State center distance, temperature, measuring torque, rotation direction and where the movement is measured.

Duplex adjustment

A dual-lead set can vary tooth thickness along the worm axis, allowing controlled adjustment by axial movement.

Wear compensation

Adjustment can compensate for some wear, but it cannot correct damaged profiles, misalignment or bearing play.

Housing and bearings

Backlash readings include the effects of shaft deflection, bearing clearance, key movement and housing compliance.

Acceptance criteria

Define initial, running and maximum allowable backlash values in the machine specification.

Recommended review sequence

  1. Confirm the machine function and operating duty.
  2. Identify the tooth system and installed geometry.
  3. Check load, speed, sliding, temperature and service factor.
  4. Select materials, heat treatment, lubrication and inspection requirements.
  5. Review shafts, bearings, housing, guards and failure consequences.
  6. Issue and approve the final manufacturing drawing.
